I think RightWingNews has many good points on this, like
http://www.rightwingnews.com/archives/week_2006_08_06.PHP#006213
Some practical facts:
- Lieberman was a core Democrat - their VP less than six years ago, a 90+ % Democrat voting record, never stabbed another Democrat, always supportive of the party, etc...
- Lamont is a rookie, extreme liberal, initially endorsed by Kos & Moore.
This has got to hurt the Democrats, it shows a blatant schism in their ranks that their own VP candidate gets booted by a rookie because Joe wasn't liberal enough and supported the Iraq war? That Lieberman is still running, and has a better chance to actually win the general election, makes it even worse. That it forces Democrats in a no-win decision is even more worse:
- If they support Lamont - They're affirming an extreme liberal, rookie and tearing down one of their own senior veterans.
- If they support Lieberman - They're seen as not affirming the will of Connecticut Democrats
Meanwhile, it's hard to blame this on Bush, so I'm not sure what else the Dems will do.
